The drought, especially in the southern half [more like three-quarters] of the UK is causing problems for water supply. The worst affected areas, as in low water levels in reservoirs and aquifers, couples with the higher demand from urban pressures, went for hosepipe bans and suggested consumers reduced usage as much as possible

It has been mooted that the UK should pump water between river catchments and reservoirs to alleviate droughts.
Theoretically, a good plan. But there are two main problems. Firstly, setting up such a system would be horrifically expensive in captial terms and used fairly infrequently. {although climate change is altering that situation}
Secondly, the environmental aspect of transfering large amounts of water between unrelated catchments would affect the ecological balance in the water bodies concerned.

As far as I am aware, only one area in the UK has had such a transfer pipeline system built and used regularly. This transfers water from the Tyne to the Wear & Tees catchments. It, and the storage at Kielder Water, were originally planned in order to support steel-making and other industries in the Tyne, Wear & Tees river valleys.
