Is it a red squirrel? They are so rare nowadays, especially in the UK. He's obviously used to finding his nuts in there, how lovely!!!

Oh yes, it is a red squirrel.
Their body fur tends to darken in the winter, and we saw that s/he has magnificent ear tufts.

I live in the "debatable lands" where the greys are still trying to gain a toe-hold over the reds.
This area isn't ideal, although there are patches of woodland. They are all quite small and separated by fields, plus a few roads. The bad weather and commercial felling has removed quite a few trees, although some replanting is underway.

One of the reasons for our providing supplementary feeding ... and we're building a nest box, as further support.
