WR(O&A) Tyne - swing bridge

About to pass under the Grade II listed Swing Bridge. The span is 281 feet and is turned hydraulically, the centre point of the rotation is under the cupola.
Designed, built - and paid for - by Armstrong in 1873 - 1876, to allow larger ships access to the upper Tyne (and his Works, upstream). It cost £240,000 to build.
On "Heritage Open Days" it is possible to tour the machinery room, booking essential.
