I wish that I had had a macro kit with me instead of the point and shoot - these shield bugs are fascinating. This one flew into the car as we were sat eating ice-creams ... moved onto some bushes nearby. When I get hold of a suitable mini-beast guide I'll have a go at an id.

I think, from a little bit of research, that this is an example of The Hawthorn Shield Bug, Acanthosoma haemorrhoidale.

Yes it is, I photographed one in my garden last year (2012) I have seen many species here and many more in Japan.
