In 1956, however, China had clandestinely begun to build a road through the remote Aksai Chin region of Ladakh in Kashmir. In 1959 it consolidated its domination of Tibet. The Dalai Lama, the spiritual and political ruler of Tibet, fled to India when Nehru gave him asylum, a move supported by Indira and helped establish a Central Relief Committee for the thousands of Tibetan refugees who followed the Dalai Lama into exile. Indira, of course, was condemned by Peking for harbouring the Dalai Lama and his followers. ~ page 264

Over more than four decades of exile, the Dalai Lama continued to insist on non-violent opposition to the brutal Chinese rule over Tibet. He threatened to resign his leadership of the Tibetan community in ex8ile if Tibetans ever resorted to a violent insurrection against th eChinese. Similarly, the Buddhist democrat Aung San Suu Kyi, refused to lead an armed struggle against the military rulers of Mayaamar who have kept her under house arrest on and off for more than a decade. ` Page 337

The key thing is the sense of universal responsibility; that is the real source of strength, the real source of happiness. If our generation exploits everything available – the trees, the water, and the minerals – without any care for the coming generations or the future, then we are at fault. Aren’t we? Xi
