Among the groups that took up Russell’s approach and developed it was one that came into existence in Vienna in the 1920s and became known as the Vienna Circle. It consisted more of scientists and mathematicians than of philosophers, and its chief concern was to establish the philosophical foundations of scientific worldview. Theirs was a philosophy that became known as Logical Positivism. It contended that the true meaning of a statement was uncovered when we asked ourselves; “What would we have to do to establish the truth or falsehood of this statement?” in other words, what observable differences does this truth or falsehood make to the way things actually are? A statement that purports to be about reality but whose truth or falsehood makes no observable difference to anything has no content, no meaning -- it is not saying anything. In this belief they had something fundamentally in common with the American Pragmatists, but their formulation of it was tighter; only statements that are empirically verifiable are empirically meaningful; and the actual meaning of any given statement is revealed by the mode of its verification. ~ page 200
