The life and death of the printmaker and sculptor Kathe Kollwitz were shaped by, and closely mirror, the history of Prussia. Her lifetime coincided almost exactly with its 1860s triumph under Bismarck, as it united all Germany under its leadership, and its physical devastation, its elimination as a state, and its removal from the map of Europe after 1945. Kollwitz was born in 1867 on the easternmost edge of Germany, in Konigsberg in East Prussia, the historic city where Elector of Brandenburg in 1701 crowned himself king, and where Immanuel Kant had reshaped European philosophy. Daughter of a prosperous and politically radical business man, and granddaughter of an equally radical Lutheran pastor, she was from childhood concerned (consumed might be the more accurate word) by issues of social justice. ~ Page 400
