For a thousand years, making a book began with the killing of animals to provide parchment, and then required the long, careful labour of a scribe. That all changed in Germany, five and half centuries ago, when Johannes Gutenberg invented a new kind of movable type and the pringing press -- and the book as we now know it was born. For many, it is the moment in which the modern world began. It is without doubt the point at which access to knowledge in Europe stopped being the privilege of the few. Gutenberg’s invention shaped the Reformation which came sixty years after he began his work, and it changed our politics. In spite of the digital revolution, it dominates the way we organize our thoughts. Reading today on the flat screens of our iPads, we still impatiently flit to the “back page” to discover whodonnit; without any self-consciousness at all we use “bookmarks”; and when sending emails, we select our “font.” In the world of advanced IT we remain unashamedly, irrecoverably, the children of Gutenberg. ` Page 285
