Relief Preparations
Commander Schley organized small, efficient crews. Including officers and men, there would be thirty-seven on the “Thetis,” thirty-four on the Bear, and thirty nine of the Alert. The light crews would provide extra room for food and comfort in the event that the ships were forced to winter in the Arctic. The crews were subjected to rigorous medical and dental examination before being signed on. For the danger and importance of duty, Secretary Chandler allocated an extra ten dollars’ pay per month of the duration of the mission, with two months bonus pay should they successfully return by their scheduled date September 1, 1884 ~ Page 254
