Before the invention of writing, knowledge circulated among the minds of the living, conveyed only by the spoken word. Yet there is only so much date that can be stored in oral history, and the danger is that when people die ideas are lost forever. But once committed to a physical medium, thoughts can be stored faithfully, referred back to years later, and built up over time. A culture that has developed writing can accumulate far more knowledge than could ever be cached in collective memories of its populace. ~ Page 210
