In Europe the nineteenth century, like the seventeenth, was an age of “commotions.” After the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789, revolution was in the air. And the man who translated biology into sociology, who translated the origin of species into the Origin of revolutions, was Karl Marx. He freely admitted his debt to Darwin. When the first English translation of the first volume ‘Das Kapital’ was about to appear, Marx wrote to Darwin asking permission to dedicate the volume to him Darwin’s surprising reply was that, while he was deeply honored, he preferred that Marx not dedicate the book to him, because his family would be disturbed to have dedicated to a Darwin a book that was so Godless!

Darwin and Marx together provided the vocabulary which has dominated the writing and thinking of historians -- Marxist and anti-Marxist, communist and anti-communist -- into our own time.

Since Marx, every sort of social change has been christened a revolution. So we have the Industrial Revolution, th Sexual Revolution and even the so-called Paperback Revolution. The word “revolution” has become a shorthand to amplify or dignify any subject.
