When the wall was present, it wasn’t much spken about; not that it is virtually absent, it is even more visible. In this stereotypical dual of East and west, each accused the other of nostalgia for the wall that had left an enduring scar on the city’s psyche; its all-too-hasty disappearance from the cityscape produced a large psychic specter. The wall, as it turns out, both divided the two Berlins and defined their codependence, each side’s psychic investment in the other that was either evil or potentially utopian mirror image of the self. Breaking that invisible mirror was travelling through the looking glass to face cultural and economic differences die not prove easy.

With the destruction of the wall, the city itself turned into “the largest construction site coexist, and archeological digging competes with the virtual reconstruction of the future. . . . Page 179
