The sunday challenge = the oldest thing in the house
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aged exactly hundred years this photo certainly is the oldest item in our house, a large original portrait of my fathers family "Snijders". You can see the proof in the lower right corner, it is signed and dated by the photographer in 1920.

A father and mother with seven children. Number eight, the youngest child died six months old in 1904. My grandmother to be is sitting on the bench. Only three years later she would die, leaving behind two very young boys with their father, on the other hand most of her brothers and sisters reached the very old age of over 90 years.....

The woman standing on the left was my godmother, she died 1995 at the age of 104 years, being the last survivor, more than 90 years after her youngest sister ......

Isn't life a lottery?

Nautilus, Nouchetdu38, Sami Serola (inactive), Esther and 11 other people have particularly liked this photo

Such photos are a treasure!
Children dying young was a sad fact, my great grandmother lost two, to cot death and diphtery. But reaching 104 years is amazing!

Heel mooi familieportrait en een uitstekend verhaal.
Daar heb ik ook vele van, omdat ik aan familieonderzoek heb gedaan, maar oorsprokelijke foto´s heb ik weinig.

Back then with all of the things that could effect one's chances of survival, a long life was not necessarily guaranteed. Your family was indeed fortunate and my goodness 104 is quite an accomplishment Luc. Strong genes for sure. Thanks for sharing part of your family history with us. Do take care and stay well.

Strong genes or not, it depends. My grandmother died when my father was almost 3 years old. Al he had left was this image of her ....

Perhaps our genes aren't the only answer Luc ... too many unknowns in life to say for sure. I'm glad your father had an image of his mother, one reason, albeit sad, that for those of us with the family photographs, they are truly treasures to hold dear.

A wonderful studio photograph, a real treasure for you and your family. Life is a lottery. My father was only 3 when his father died. His mother was left a widow, with three children. My Dad lived to 102.
