Coke

High up on the moors above Buxton in the Goyt Coalfield are the remains of a large number of coal shafts and adits. The Goyt Colliery was provided with a siding from the Cromford and High peak Railway to which coal was run down a chute from the colliery tramway on the hillside. The tramway also served a bank of four beehive coke ovens of which two are still easily recognised. This view is looking into the easternmost oven from which the gritstone face has largely disapppeared. Inside the oven the firebrick lining shows signs of extreme heat and the bricks are partially fused.
