Draw holes

Draw holes
The eastern bank of the River Don at Warmsworth was heavily quarried for limestone in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The river bank was lined by large numbers of limekilns from which the burnt lime was loaded directly into keels for transport over a wide area.

Today most of the kilns are in a state of demolition and decay and can be hard to discern. However one large pair of running kilns has survived and the draw tunnel of one of these is accessible to see the two draw holes for the burnt lime.
