Siege Simon shafts 1 & 2


This colliery in the Lorraine coal basin was sunk from 1904 and the first coal was wound in 1907 (Shaft 1 on the left). Sinking shaft two commenced in 1908. It was the last mine in the eastern sector when it was abandoned in December 1997. The site is now a national monument although you wouldn't guess from the state it is in.
