Fauld explosion

Warning at the edge of the Fauld crater. In November 1944 the detonation of the RAF munitions store in the Fauld gypsum mine was the largest man made non-nuclear explosion which killed 70 people and created a massive hole. The site today has been reclaimed by wildlife but there is plenty of evidence of the disaster away from the crater and this includes bomb craters in the woods and large lumps of gypsum, often weighing over a ton, which were flung over large distances and lie in the fields where they fell.
