In the UK at present, has natural gas largely taken the place of coal?

About 40% of electricity generation in the UK is currently generated by coal. Gas is becoming very expensive and is often in short supply. We nearly ran out in March.

So there must still be some large-scale coal mining taking place somewhere? Or is it now imported?

There are only three deep pits left - Thoresby, Hatfield and Kellingley. There is quite a bit of opencast working, but a lot is now imported.
