Black Bear feeding on Canada Buffaloberries
My friend Sandy and I had such a wonderful (and long) day out in the mountains on 10 August 2013. The scenery is so spectacular the whole journey, but Highway 93, the Icefields Parkway, is said to be the most spectacular scenic route in the world. We drove as far as Bow Lake and hiked slowly, looking for everything of interest. The Bow Glacier Trail runs along the right hand side of the lake and continues to the Falls that are at a much higher elevation. You can see these in the distance from the lake. On the return drive to Calgary, we were thrilled to catch sight of two Black Bears at the far side of the road, a short distance apart. Impossible to get even half-decent photos, but the one above shows the second bear, eating its fill of Canada Buffaloberry berries.

Ha, getting ready for hibernation ... Black Bears can hibernate for as long as 5-6 months in some areas. The Bears located in the colder northern areas like Canada, hibernate longer than those in the warmer south. Terrific to come across ... generally Black Bears are timid, as the Grizzly is over 20X's more dangerous!! Grizzly next Anne?? LOL ... a terrific find and capture!!

Thanks, Art! I think I've only ever seen one Grizzly - well, two actually, a mother and her cub - and that was last summer. A group of us had gone to Upper Kananaskis Lake in the Rocky Mountains and had arrived in one of the parking lots. It was empty, except for us, and then a truck with two guys in it came into the parking lot, warning us that a mother Grizzly and her cub were right in that area. It was a most unnerving feeling, standing in the open and seeing the bears gradually move in a circle around us, just within the bushes at the edge of the parking area. Both were totally focussed on eating the Canada Buffaloberry berries, though we did get one or two glances from them - which definitely was not a good feeling. Trust me, I left the car door open, just in case I had to get in fast! Sure gets the adrenalin going!

Awesome creatures! I have been lucky enough to have seen quite a few foraging in the dump up at the cottage...before my photography days. A few years ago one strolled into our neighbourhood in Pickering causing quite a stir. Great image!

Lol, can you believe that a Black Bear walked through the entrance way of Rockyview Hospital here a few years ago? Presumably, it had made its way from the North Glenmore Park/Weaselhead area.
