Old and New

I'm sure there's quite a story behind the wall across from Roberts Camera, off Meridian St in the Wholesale District of Indianapolis. Now it adjoins a parking garage, but I suspect it didn't always.
Above as Promised

Eventually, we did end up finding a way to look out over the traffic on Illinois Street, in one of the unlocked ballrooms in the hotel built on the bridge. I felt like I'd come through on a fatherly promise.
Hoosier Dome

It's not a dome, and it's definitely not the Hoosier Dome, but to me the place where the Colts play will always retain the name it had when I was her age.
ICC Downstairs

We took a skywalk over Capitol Avenue, into the Indiana Convention Center, at which point Veda noticed that there didn't seem to be any way down to the lower level. "There's always a way," I told her as we searched for stairs or an elevator. "You just have to keep looking."
Crowne Cops

The hotel we explored just happened to adjoin the headquarters of the county police -- some of whom were likely on the other side of this mirrored glass, wondering what we might be up to.

When you're four, all adventures involve an accomplice. In this case, it was her stuffed bunny. Well, and me.

At the Royal Crowne Plaza in Indianapolis's Union Station, you can stay the night in a hotel room made out of an old train car. Someday, I promised her, we will.

A very, very cold walk along the White River the other day, toting a Mamiya M645 with 80mm lens, Adox CHS 50 film and, wisely, a tripod.
As a side note, I'm not sure what qualities are present in a film to make it "scan well," but I do see a difference with this "old style" emulsion versus what I get with, say, Kodak Portra. The scan is a bit of a letdown from the really great-looking negative, to be honest. But once I get into the darkroom, maybe the print will surprise me the other way!
River Reflection
|
|
|
Scan of a print made when I finally started getting decent results in the darkroom. I over-burned the sky, I realize, and the negative proved a good bit tougher to print than I'd initially thought, but overall I'm comfortable sharing.
Still, though. I must admit that the other digital version of this -- the one I edited digitally from a scan of the negative -- reveals a lot more detail in the trees and water. It'll be a good day when I'm getting better results in the wet darkroom than in the digital version.
Wahpihani

I was told that the White River, as it was renamed by, um, White people, got its name from the Delaware Indians who called it "Wahpihani," meaning "Great White River," because of the visible limestone bed beneath much of it. But now, as I try to verify this to write this caption, I see that Michael McCafferty, in "Native American Place Names of Indiana," says this is hooey. Well. It's still lovely.
Looking Across

The owner of a local scrap-exchange crafts place very kindly set aside for me some donated Kodak Vericolor, which expired in July of 1996. I figured I'd try it in my Holga, on an extremely bright and sunny day, but even still -- the negatives came back from the lab with scarcely anything visible. But, happily enough, thorough careful scanning, heavy processing and a conversion to black and white, I was eventually able to get something kind of neat-looking.
Heading Home

Shot on extremely expired Kodak Vericolor in a snowstorm, this was one of the only images that even close to came out. But I like how the heavy grain adds to the frigid, dreamy feel of the scene.

Not a Barn

This *corn crib,* as its owner explained to me, sits off SR13 in Madison County, Indiana, just south of the town of Elwood. I think it is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.

I could've composed this better, and I definitely lost detail in the highlights on the water, but hey. It was really cold. What I thought was interesting here was that this is just HP5 processed in Rodinal, yet it kind of looks "colorized." The shadows seem to have a bluish cast and the highlights yellow, which wasn't far off from how it actually looked out there the other day.

Good Morning, Tillie

This old, "UG" Ilex Acu-Veriwide, which seems to be an Angulon clone, is still comfortably wide even when used with the Calumet C2 rollfilm back. Oh, and I loved the morning light streaming in on my in-laws' dog here.
An Afternoon Well Spent

This Caltar 210 lens, while absurdly sharp and wonderful, seems to result in an awfully narrow viewing angle on my 4x5. Using it with a 6x7 rollfilm back makes it downright intimate!
