The Garibaldi Smokestack

A landmark on the Oregon Coast, in Garibaldi, OR. The stack was built in 1927 as part of the Hammond Sawmill and is the only part of the mill that survives. It was almost demolished for safety reasons in 2013 because the concrete had deteriorated so much in the sea air, but was instead preserved by sheathing it in fiberglass to forestall further decay. It was considered enough of a historical monument to warrant the effort!

A fine shot!
slgwv club has replied to Andy Rodker clubslgwv club has replied to Pam J clubslgwv club has replied to Gudrun clubslgwv club has replied to Annemarie clubTY for the info you furnished about crater and caldera definitions...heh, there is a REASON that those terms are so darn confusing...if you look them up, you'll see...they are sometimes synonymously described. And after all that, you've filled me in on further details! Thanks for that--I enjoyed your extra info.
Sorry you weren't able to stop by last time...socked in with smoke is no fun...we spent September and October trying to avoid the smoke, which chased us from one park to the next, rousting us from here, sending us there, but in the end we still had a lovely time. :)
Finally, just wanted to mention how much I love your pictures and the information you share. It's fun that you're basically in our backyard so a great deal of your pictures are places we can go or have visited! I love adding spots we'd like to visit based on pictures of others on ipernity, so thanks for that!
Have a great day!
slgwv club has replied to Janet Brien clubOne problem with the technical terms is that popular expositions have been known to garble them! ;) And in any case they do change over time, and there is always some variation in usage. I used to tell classes that the technical jargon is just a convenience, to replace a paragraph with a word or two. It's not word magic--the concepts are what's important, not the words!
Thanks for your kind comments on my pix! It's fun to see your take on places, too. Here's Paulina Lake in the smoke :(
