Mt. Elwell (7818 ft/2383 m) and Lakes Basin

Looking north from the Pacific Crest Trail near the vague northern end of the Sierra Nevada. Long Lake is the large lake nearest Mt. Elwell; the lake at extreme right is Silver Lake. There are other lakes in the area not visible; Lakes Basin came by its name honestly! The smoke plume from the Walker Fire, which burned over 50,000 acres (>20,000 ha) in Plumas National Forest last September, is visible on the skyline to the right (insert). The insert at the summit of Mt. Elwell shows the view back toward here, from a trip we took a number of years ago.
