I guess the question is who would do any repairs etc? I imagine that, unless there is a general pressure from the public, the local authorities would give it little or no priority - and the mining company has long since gone.

Oh, for sure! I'm sure it was volunteer labor by locals to begin with. It's just curious that no one seems interested any more. Maybe the current mine owners got paranoid about liability and forbade any outside work.
