A prehistoric fish?

A prehistoric fish?
Guarding the trail on the left! Off the Needle Rock trail, in the Painted Hills north of Reno. Looking southeast; Pyramid Lake in the background. We're just off the Rez here; in fact, we bought a permit from the tribe so we could park where we did!

Good, so I would have been correct in guessing the Paiute.

Sorry to butt in but continuing on my (short) theme with Steve, your town is named after the local indiginous population and it it would be perfectly pc to say so.
Mind you, using the name 'Falls' could lead to all kinds of problems.(Not sure what these might be but I'm working on it).

And the Otago sun trap region produces my all-time favourite wine (more or less any pinot noir from there, but I wistfully remember one called Wild Earth!).
An amazing fact considering that it ain't all that far from the Antarctic Circle!

Up too late again, Andy? I'm not sure what you're talking about. Oh, it's probably just me.

As for the falls, there aren't any. There were minor ones a few decades ago, but they were more like rapids at the head of the Klamath River. The federal land and water reclamation people (or, whatever that's called) knocked them down to "manage" the water in the Klamath Basin region. They rearranged topography all over the place in some major ways. It's complicated. That's all I know and I'm pretty sketchy on the topic.

Now you are confusing me, Diane! I recall the Klammath as a native tribe (I used to know a lot about the native tribes of America - although I have forgotten much). Whether it is PC or not to refer to indigens by their tribal name, I have no idea! That is all I was asking!
Decided to Google it and yes, I was right: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klamath_Tribes
