New Washoe City

New Washoe City
Washoe Valley, Nevada, USA. Looking southwesterly; yes, this is a sunset shot! Carson City, Nevada's capital, is beyond the hills on the left. Washoe Lake (with water!) in the middle distance; the snowy mountains on the skyline are the Carson Range, the spur of the Sierra Nevada that juts into Nevada. The settlement in the foreground is New Washoe City, where I live. Granite boulders in the immediate foreground are bedrock in this part of the Virginia Range, and are considered part of the Sierra Nevada batholith.
As I've mentioned before, the word "city" has no legal significance in the US, so even a tiny unincorporated burg like this can call itself a "city!"

Wonderful shot and very interesting notes. It's been a while since I have seen the word batholith in print on ipernity and as I'm fond of much granite scenery, I have to be fond of batholiths!!

Heh. Kind of an archaic term in modern geology, because it can imply a uniformity that doesn't exist, but still useful! The "Sierra Nevada batholith" actually consists of lots of different granite bodies emplaced at different--sometimes wildly different--times, but it is a large area of granite bedrock!

That's a very scenic area where you live, Steve. I see on the map that you have ski-fields on those snowy slopes and even a hang glider landing area nearby! Lovely image too.

Thanks, Roger, George! Yeah, we like it here. There's a lot of public land, mostly administered by the Federal BLM (Bureau of Land Management), but some by the US Forest Service. And, altho we don't hang glide, we do have season passes at the ski resort on the northwest side of the valley!
