When it's down, is it safely crossable on foot?

Probably depends on how far down the water is and where you're trying to cross. There are usually wet places remaining when these lakes dry up, by springs, stream outflows, and such, and they're likely to be very muddy. So maybe, but--be careful! Where people really can get in trouble is not on foot, but in a vehicle. You can end up to the axle really quickly--and then you _are_ stuck! On the Black Rock, people just have to wait till the playa dries out, because a tow company, much less the BLM, isn't going to risk getting stuck themselves.

I've driven by that multiple times, but never gotten a good shot of the lake from high up. Thanks for the detail here about it.
