Martin Creek

Martin Creek
Humboldt County, northern Nevada. It looked inviting to explore, except that (a) there were a _lot_ of people (as you might not gather from this photo), and (b) there are lots of rattlesnakes! There also wasn't the well-defined use path along the creek we were expecting; this road peters out in another quarter mile or so. The skylined peak is Sugarloaf (6411 ft/1954 m). The big gray-green shrubs are sagebrush; the trees down by the creek are Great Basin cottonwood (Populus fremontii).

As inviting as it is, the presence of rattlesnakes would be enough for me to reconsider venturing further!

We'd read they were abundant here, and then when we saw one less than 10 minutes after getting out of the car-- That's the downside of water in country like this: the vegetation attracts rodents, which then attract the snakes!
