Manzanita

"Little apple" in Spanish, from its red berries. It's a characteristic shrub of the Sierra Nevada and adjacent ranges. The shiny round leaves and red, peeling bark are characteristic. The berries are a favorite with bears--you need to make lots of noise in a manzanita thicket that time of year!
