Manzanita

Manzanita
"Little apple" in Spanish, from its red berries. It's a characteristic shrub of the Sierra Nevada and adjacent ranges. The shiny round leaves and red, peeling bark are characteristic. The berries are a favorite with bears--you need to make lots of noise in a manzanita thicket that time of year!

, William Sutherland, have particularly liked this photo

Thanks, everyone! It's not exactly a photogenic bush, but it's abundant--

They're gorgeous bushes up close, particularly the wood, but definitely difficult to photograph.

Turns out I didn't remember that they also are abundant elements of the scrub in central Arizona as well. I tried to get some pix there too!
