Cedar Breaks, Utah, USA


A west-facing scarp on the crest above Cedar City, Utah. It's eroded into the same orange-and-white weathering Wasatch Formation as is Bryce Canyon, so the resemblance is not accidental! Traditionally, a "break" or "breaks" was a steep scarp or ridge--that is, a "break" in the land surface. The usage is now pretty much archaic except for place names. The "cedar" is in fact juniper, a traditional name in the US west.

This is looking back north from the area of the North Fork of the Virgin, where it's starting to drop into Zion.
These places would be state or at least county parks anywhere else! ;)
