Fossil Log

Fossil Log
George W. Lund Petrified Forest, Washoe Co., Nevada, USA. Administered by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management.) Associated with Tertiary ash-flow tuffs. The logs right off the graded road are in chain-link cages, but most are just out in the open. It's nice that they haven't all been carted away--so far, anyway! Btw, paleontologists these days just refer to "fossil" rather than "petrified" wood.

Thanks, everyone! The informality of the exhibit is striking--I'm glad it hasn't been vandalized or stolen, at least so far.

Fascinating. I guess the main risk is from 'collectors'.

It does require getting on a dirt road--but that includes most of the roads in this area! ;)
