Hole in the Wall Lake

Hole in the Wall Lake
Formed just off Oregon state route 86 by a landslide that dammed the Powder River in the fall of 1984. The slide was triggered by a combination of heavy rains and weak, incompetent rock (Jacobson et al., Oregon Geology, May 1985). At this time the highway had been rebuilt to bypass the new lake, and AFAIK the new alignment is still there.

Heh. It _is_ geo-jargon--basically referring to a weak unit. And yes, "competent" beds are those that can support cliffs!

That's interesting! I was living in CA, so didn't hear about this. Your info is so great, we all get little geology seminar for each photo. : )

By the way, I used to live near Devil's Slide, Hwy 1 on the coast - perhaps you've heard of all the hassles with that one over many decades. I commuted on that hwy and after a solid week of heavy rain, actually drove by the first cracks on the highway for the upcoming slide in 2006 (?). I immediately knew what they were and it scared the wits out of me! (Drop-off into the ocean is, what, a couple hundred feet there?) Sure enough, hwy was in the process of being closed just after I got through and stayed that way for five months. There's now a tunnel through the mountain - finally! tinyurl.com/nbm2xgc

Glad you like the info! One of my pet peeves is raw photos posted to a group but with no background. My sister & her family used to live in Half Moon Bay in the early 90s, so they had to deal with Hwy 1. IIRC the highway was closed for a time back then, too.
