Toiyabe Crest Trail

This trail was built by the CCC in the mid-30s. It seems a curious endeavor--the area is still remote enough that (according to reports) much of the trail away from the trailheads now involves serious route-finding, due to route deterioration from the absence of traffic. And the area was _really_ remote ca. 1935! The Toiyabes deserve it, though--it's one of the longest and highest ranges (peaks >11K feet) in Nevada, and right in the center of the state. The trail would be much better known if it were in Utah or California!
This is near the southern end of the trail, in South Twin River canyon. The CCC bothered to build stone steps in concrete! This place is now about 5 miles in from the trailhead, in the Arc Dome wilderness. There might have been somewhat closer vehicle access in the 1930s, but it's _still_ a long way in!
