Tiger

London Zoo, 1956
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "zoos".
The family story always told about this photo, was that the tiger was inflamed by me - throwing himself against the bars and snarling to get at my two year old self. Not sure how my parents knew it was me, and not them, he was infuriated with - but that's the way stories go.
I feel sad looking at this photo, and thinking of all the animals that were penned up in miserable concrete cages like this in zoos all over the world.
Fortunately, many zoos now (though not all) are enlightened places, where although the animals are penned, their environments are a million times more humane than this awful prison.
