Mrs. Pennfoun, Ethel Pennfoun and Nana, 1949

The downstairs neighbors at 77 Seymour Road in their shared garden with my Nana and "Bob".
Interestingly, there was no "Mr. Pennfoun" (Ethel was born "out of wedlock" as they said) and Ethel was very likely gay, but those facts were never referred to by my mother's family. (This from my mother.)
They were nice to my brother and I - although we were always being told to tread quietly in case we disturbed them downstairs.
