Broeker Veiling – Auction hall

Broeker Veiling – Auction hall
The auction in Broek op Langedijk was established in 1887 and was the first Dutch auction. The auction hall dates from 1912. Ships with produce would come from the nearby small fields and would sail through the auction hall.

In the gap between the rows of seats, there is a channel of water. You can just make out a ship (with a coffin, as there was a funeral fair going on; you can have a funeral service in this hall too).

The surrounding countryside consisted of about 15,000 small islands which were only accessible by ship. The islands were used for farming green produce. If you look at the present-day map: www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/52.6763/4.8160 then you can see the remaining islands around the Oosterdel pond.

Here is a small film of 1925 to see the auction in action:

From the 1920s engines became more prevalent, so it became easier.
