The gate dates from 1560 and was originally a gate of the rope maker Van der Werf in the Lege Werfsteeg (Empty Warf Alley). It was moved to the Lakenhal (Cloths Hall) in 1883 where it was first the access gate to the janitor's house on 28, Oude Singel (Old Moat). When that house was demolished in 1931 the gate was moved to its present position, next to the Lakenhal, giving access to a fire escape route and a storage space.
