The spot of the Lammenschans

Not a very exiting spot, but during the siege of Leiden in 1573/4 the Spaniards held a position here, the so-called Lammenschans. The position was important because it controlled the access to Leiden. When on October 2, 1574 the orphan Cornelis Joppensz was sent out from the city of Leiden to investigate the Lammenschans, he discovered that the Spaniards had fled and that they left behind a pot of beef stew, called hutspot. To this day hutspot is eaten every year on October 2.
