August Willemsen (1936-2007)

August Willemsen died on Thursday. He was a translator (mostly from the Portuguese) and a writer. He made himself famous with translations of the work of Fernando Pessoa and by his book Braziliaanse brieven (Brazilian Letters), which contain his letters back home from several visits to Brasil.
He was one of my favourite writers. I think I gave Braziliaanse brieven to every friend or family for their birthdays.
This is a picture I took several years ago on a boating trip. Willemsen is on the right, talking to film maker Kees Hin.
