The Palau del Lloctinent, a historic building constructed in Gothic style between 1549 and 1557, in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, currently holds the cultural and educational activities organised by the Archives of the Kingdom of Aragon. It houses documents belonging to the Counts of Barcelona and the kings of Aragon, Valencia and Majorca in the 9th to 17th centuries, as well as archives of various civil and ecclesiastical institutions and private archives from the Spanish territories of the Kingdom of Aragón (10th to 20th centuries).
The Archives of the Kingdom of Aragon is the oldest institution of its kind in Europe. For this reason it was declared part of the European Heritage network by the Council of Europe.It was established as Royal Archives in 1318.
