Gloop, gloop, gloop... I'm pretty much always happy to visit the Tar Pits with out-of-town visitors on a nice sunny Sunday afternoon.

It's a bit mesmerizing to stare at the tar pool, watching bubbles rise and ripple on the surface. What I can't convey in photos is that the whole site SMELLS of tar--and you have to step carefully throughout the park, to avoid getting tar on shoes and pant legs. It's still an active research site, so depending when you go, you can see fossils being excavated, cleaned, and catalogued.

I'll be up there again tomorrow (well, at the Craft and Folk Art Museum across the street).

It's a lovely park on Wilshire Avenue, next to LA County Museum of Art. We've been there for concerts, and there are often children rolling down the hill there. The park includes the Page Museum, which displays and explains a lot of the finds from the tar pits. Throughout the park, there are active bubbling spots of tar protected by grates; and some parts of the parking lot are usually blocked off, because there's too much tar seeping through.
