Yes, I seem to have had a narrow escape. (My picture, above, was taken over 55 years ago).

Ah yes, they still had the old green buses in those days. 425, if I remember rightly.

Yes, they had Green Line buses in those days, but I walked there (as well as to all the other local beauty spots - the Silent Pools, Newlands Corner, Shere, Leith Hill and St Martha's) from Netley House, Gomshall, which in those days was an HF Holidays guest house, where I was staying. Oh, nostalgia.

It wasn't a Green Line, but a London Transport country bus from Guildford to Dorking.

You chose a pleasant spot for your holidays. Did you stay there on your own, as you must have been quite young at the time?

No, I was there with the son of family friends; he was a bit older than me. I didn't choose Gomshall; it was his mother who arranged the holiday; I'd never even heard of HF. But I joined the following year and have been a member ever since, and in fact will be staying in another of their guest houses (on Exmoor) in August. He was less enchanted with it and never went HF again.

I haven't seen the man for nearly 40 years, but only last year found him on Facebook and we caught up with life events since.

Very foolish. You look pretty close to the edge too, but presumably that is deceptive.

Incidentally, I too went up Leith Hill in 1966, so it's not impossible that we might have passed each other (I do recall a spotty youth at the top of the tower), and St Martha's was a regular haunt.

It's all coming back to me now.

I've still got the camera with which that Kodachome slide was taken, and the slide. But I no longer have either the spots or (alas) the youth.
