David & Goliath - 24 October 2015

The Arsenal official programme from Saturday 7 January 1956 has particular resonance for me although it predates me by several months. My partner of 38 years comes from Bedford and has supported Arsenal for many years. Funny, isn't it, how the strangest threads run through the most ordinary of lives?

The FA Cup 3rd round match at Highbury ended in a 2-2 draw. Arsenal later beat Bedford 2-1 in the replay after Bedord led 1-0. A British Pathé video of the replay on Thursday 12 January 1956 can be seen here. The attendance at the small ground is enormous and the dress of the crowd, albeit on a cold January day, is a history lesson in itself.
