Highcliffe Castle (3) - 30 November 2014

Highcliffe Castle near Christchurch in Dorset is a surprise in many ways. Built as recently as 1831-6, it was damage by fires in 1967 and 1968 and declined to become a ruin for many years before a restoration which started in 1994 and was completed in 2008. The original construction used stone from several sources. The King's Oriel seen in detail here was salvaged from Les Andelys manor house near Rouen.
