Sky Sheppey 2009 (3M)

In 2009 a sub-committee of Eastchurch Parish Council with many additional members sought, laudably, to mark the centenary of the birth, in 1909, of UK aviation. The Isle of Sheppey was prominent in the early days and Eastchurch airfield, for example, was significant until 1950. A monument, erected in the centenary year, stands near the western road entrance to Eastchurch. In his pursuit of flight, man seeks to emulate the many beautiful creatures for whom flight is natural. It struck me that this treatment resembles in a clumsy way the lines on the wings of many butterflies and, at the same time, underlines the fragility of our relationship with the unpredictable environment
of the air.
