Every anniversary brings back the memories of people I knew and went to school with who died that day as well as the raw emotions. It brings back memories of seeing the acrid smoke rising for months from the surreal debris (the last of the fires weren't put out until December), city blocks covered in soot from the fallen towers (everything gray) the thousands of posters of families desperately seeking their missing loved ones, the explosion of shrines by hospitals, fire departments (some from which not a single person returned) and police stations, in parks and everywhere in downtown Manhattan and else where in NYC. Yes, it still hurts and always will. Thus it is important that people always stand up to oppose everything this malignant cancer stands for -- defend freedom of expression, stand up for human rights and never be silenced out of fear. May those who died that 9/11 be enjoying eternity and may their families and friends and everyone who stands in solidarity around the world find comfort and peace knowing that nothing this evil can do will ever extinguish the light of human decency not exterminate human life and most importantly individuality!

There are so many stories of people who don't know they are ill - yet.

One of the days, nobody ever will forget.
Ask anybody in all the world ... he/she will remember, what they did in this day, exactly the moment, first time they heard about/ have seen the pictures of the burning towers.
A day changed the world.

Yes, the world is forever changed. The post Cold War era of peace is over, the West is and will be fighting for survival probably past our lifetimes and oceans no longer provide the protection they once did. :(

I am so sorry that you were so deeply affected by 9/11...I didn't lose anyone personally, but I know countless people who did. I also have two friends who would have BEEN on one of those flights, and in the middle of the night a few days before, one of them woke up from a nightmare of a plane crash and she cancelled the tickets. I believe her. It's crazy how some will get premonitions like this. Both of them lost family and friends. I'm so sorry for your loss. It is a day I will never ever forget, and I hope that nobody else forgets.

Your tribute was creative and fitting. Nice job, very thought-provoking. Thanks for spending time to make such a poignant presentation and taking the time to chat with people about that day.

Best move your friend could've made. Glad she had the premonition! With re: to affect, it comes with being a New Yorker. Millions of us share similar experiences. And while on premonition whose twin is fate, I once interviewed for a position at Canter Fitzgerald in the early '90s but didn't get it. I was disappointed then, but in all likelihood considering how many of their employees died that day, it's probably why I'm alive today and in hindsight, the best thing that could've happened for me. I'll also remember the towers with fondness -- dining at Windows on the World while looking down upon the city I love and the WTC's unique open-air observation deck. Today's glass enclosures in skyscrapers some how take away from the experience.

May their souls be at peace and their loved ones find healing and consolation in happy memories. Great tribute, William, and thanks for the explanation. We will also never forget those we lost that day; a neighbor who was an FDNY Lt. from Rescue 1 in Manhattan and a friend of my wife's from high school, who was a court officer. I watched the towers burn from the Narrows, but didn't see them fall.

Thank you for sharing your experience Puzzler that illustrates just how profound this infamous act of evil was and how so many of us (especially New Yorkers and residents of the tri-State area) have been personally touched and affected in some way by the great loss of innocent lives. Can't forget the people of the Beltway (Pentagon) and PA (Flight 93) either.
