Olana State Historic Site, New York (DSC9587)

Olana State Historic Site, New York (DSC9587)
In 1867, Frederick Church, a landscaper painter, acquired a parcel of mature woods at the top of a hill in Hudson, New York and began planning a large house for the site, which was constructed between 1870 and 1872. The property was named "Olana" probably by Isabel, Frederick's wife. Over the last forty years of his life, Frederic Church created a 250-acre designed landscape at Olana. New York State purchased the property in 1966, and it was opened to the public.

Ken Burns said in the title of his beautiful documentary that National parks were America's greatest idea. This site is certainly one of Frederic Church and New York State greatest idea.

Thank you for you comments. I agree that national parks and other preservation efforts were a great idea. Unfortunately, even now, there is pushback when new areas are considered. I am thankful for what New York did in 1966. It allowed me to enjoy this place.
