Designed by Thomas Telford construction started 1795 and opened 1805, and crosses the River Dee. At the eastern end of the Vale of Llangollen, the stone and cast iron structure has 18 arches and is a unesco world heritage site.
The Chester to Shrewsbury railway runs at the eastern end, of the Vale of Llangollen. Half a mile from the Pontcysylite Aqueduct. Scottish engineer Henry Robertson constructed the viaduct 1846-48,
Liverpool merchants were concerned about an invasion by Napoleon, construction started 1826 and was completed three years later. It was known as the "Little Gibraltar of the Mersey".
