Onion Grass in the Woodpile

Onion Grass in the Woodpile
Not onion, and not grass either, but instead it is:
Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum), emerging Springtime shoots trapped by a snowstorm ... there will be myriad 1.5cm stellate white flowers in a few weeks ...

A European native, escaped from cultivation in parts of North America from so long ago that it is naturalized almost as a native wildflower ...

Hey Andy, my botanical chronology is off (the photo was taken mid-March, and so I meant a couple of weeks after that); they bloom April-ish in central Maryland too. Years ago, a county road crew was looking for a place to dump a truckload of dirt cleaned out of rural roadside ditches, and I needed some fill dirt ... and mixed in were a few clumps of Star-of-Bethlehem bulbs. Multiplying in profusion, now they are everywhere(!) around my house.

Hi Wally

I really like this picture!
You have caught the detail of the crystals so well.
I guess snow is pretty rare for you guys. You have made a few fantastic shots here.

Best Wishes
Peter

Actually, Peter, snow is a regular Winter occurrence in Maryland, often a half-dozen instances of snowfall of 6 inches to a foot each Winter, occasionally much deeper accumulations; and infrequently a raging blizzard. Four times in the last 30 years, I have shovelled more than 2 feet of snow off my roof; but nowadays I don't want want to do that again.
This shot was after Springtime (March) snowstorm; there is usually one of those every year, and sometimes in April too (daffodils with caps of snow) ...
Lawd, it's snowing right now; 2 inches down with maybe 2 - 5 more to come.

Thanks you for your complimentary words.

If your yard is anything like mine, those 'pretty little flowers' will appear anyplace!
