Barrocal do Douro, Portugal

The “Moderno Escondido” is a set of houses and other infrastructure that were built in the 50s and 60s to house the workers involved in the construction of the Picote, Miranda do Douro and Bemposta dams. It intended to be an “ideal city”, a city born from scratch, with the necessary infrastructure to be a self-sufficient system for 4,000 people.
The complex reflects the contemporary modernist influences of Le Corbusier and the application of the assumptions of the Charter of Athens, and its intersection with Portuguese culture and included an area with housing for workers, a school, a church, a shopping center, houses for the managing staff and an inn.
